There are both standard and e-micro contracts, each designed to suit a variety of traders' needs, accounts and risk tolerances. Unlike traditional forex, the currency futures market is regulated as a futures market and has centralized pricing and clearing. There are several available E-micro Forex Futures contracts : euroU. CME Group touts E-micro Forex Futures, a one-tenth the size of its usual forex futures, as "the perfect size" for forex investors who are interested in trading in a "regulated and secure forex market" but want to have a much more limited exposure to risk. E-micro Forex Futures offer liquidity, security and transparency, according to CME Group. "With more than $100 billion in daily liquidity, CME Forex is the largest regulated Forex marketplace in the world," it explains. The CME Forex product suite consists of 49 futures and 31 options contracts based on 20 currencies." In addition, CME Group offers security via "centralized clearing, guaranteed counterparty credit and segregation of customer funds." And its transparency and anonymity mean that forex traders, whether they are individuals or large institutions, have "complete and equal access to the book of prices and trading opportunities." Benefits of E-micro Forex Futures. In 2009, Larry Schneider, director of business development the Chicago-based independent introducing brokerage firm Zaner Group, offered five reasons why the micro-currency trading enabled by E-micro Forex Futures would be good for some investors: First, he noted the value of working within a regulated market. Fully-transparent markets that offer investors a level playing field. Customer protection through segregated customer funds and counterparty credit risk. All trades are executed on the CME Group's Globex electronic platform, which offers usability and dependability. Micro currency futures are all cash-settled. Investors do not take on the risk or possibility of having to make or take physical delivery.

Introduction To E-Micro Forex Futures. While there is no central marketplace for the foreign exchange (forex) market, foreign exchange futures are one way to trade forex through exchange-traded contracts. Forex futures are similar to other futures contracts in that the currency pairs' exchange rates act as the underlying commodity in the exchange. In 2009, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) introduced a smaller version of currency futures contracts – the E-micro forex futures suite. These six currency pairs trade at one-10th the size of the corresponding forex futures contracts and make forex futures trading more accessible to a wider variety of traders and investors, including active individual traders, small commodity trading advisors (CTAs) and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Here we'll take a look at these forex futures and show you how you can incorporate them into your trading. TUTORIAL: The Forex Market. What Are E-micro Forex Futures? E-micro forex futures contracts include six exchange-traded currency futures contracts that are one-tenth the size of the traditional currency futures contracts. For the trader or investor, this equates to reduced margin requirements and less risks than are associated with the E-micro's big brothers.

The E-micro forex futures contracts are traded exclusively on CME Globex, which is the Chicago Mercantile Exchange's electronic trading platform and the world's largest regulated forex marketplace. Figure 1 shows a comparison of contract specifications between the standard currency futures contracts and their corresponding E-micro contracts. These three smaller contracts are fully fungible with the full-size forex futures contracts. Three of the contracts are fully fungible with the CME group's full-sized forex futures contracts: EURUSD, GBPUSD and AUDUSD. Margins and exchange fees are scaled down proportionately to the full-size contract. For example, if the full-size EURUSD contract had a $4,050 margin requirement per contract, the E-micro EURUSD contract would have one-10th the margin requirement, or in this example, $405 per contract. Regularly updated margin requirements for the E-micro contracts can be found by contacting the CME. (For related reading on margin, take a look at Forex Leverage: A Double-Edged Sword. ) E-micro Forex Futures Contract Specifications The CME offers six currency pairs as E-micro forex futures contracts as seen in Figure 2: EURUSD, USDJPY, GBPUSD, AUDUSD, USDCHF and USDCAD. Like other futures products, each contract has specifications regarding the size of the contract, the minimum price increment and the corresponding tick value. These specifications allow traders to understand the dynamics of each contract and determine the potential profit or loss for particular price movements. The EURUSD contract, for example, has a minimum tick size of 0.0001; each price tick up or down will result in a corresponding US$1.25 increase or decrease in value. If a long trade is entered at $1.3957, for instance, and price moves to $1.3967, the 10-tick price increase would be worth 10 X $1.25, or $12.50. Figure 2 also shows each contract's ticker symbol. As futures contracts, each symbol must also be followed by the contract month and year to define the particular contract. The E-micro forex futures contracts trade with set expiration dates on a quarterly cycle, with contract months falling in March (designated as "H"), June ("M"), September ("U") and December ("Z"). The EURUSD contract for December 2010, then, would be referred to as M6EZ10: Should I Open a Forex or Futures Account?

Hello traders! Over the past few months of teaching with Online Trading Academy , a question has come up more and more often with new students. “Which accountasset class should I start trading first? Futures or spot forex?” This week’s newsletter will discuss the major differences between the two markets. Believe it or not, nearly every decision we make in trading (much like life) has potential positive things and potential negative things associated with that decision. If I choose to have a super small stop loss because I am trading with a very small supply or demand zone, this means I get to take a large position; however, when trading with a very small zone, there is a chance I won’t get filled on my trade. See? Both a positive and a negative. Many new tradersstudents choose to start with one leveraged asset class or another; my personal belief is that you will probably end up trading both asset classes, if not, stocks and options as well. Being a well-rounded trader using multiple asset classes allows us to take advantage of every type of market, being trending or sideways channeling.

The most significant difference between a futures account and a spot forex account is the actual things that you can trade. With a futures account, you can trade stock market indexes, bonds, metals like gold and copper, cattle, wheat, even currencies! However, your choice of currencies is a bit limited. When actual trading volume is taken into consideration, there are only a handful of currency pairs that are “worth” trading. When considering the choices available for trading with a spot forex account, in the United States we are limited to trading just currency pairs (some foreign countries allow trading in metals in their forex accounts). However, we do have the ability to trade many more currency pairs than are “worth” trading in the futures market. So each account has the ability to trade different thingssymbols. A second very significant difference between the two markets is the amount of actual dollar risk it takes to trade them. When trading the S&P 500 futures contract (the ESZ14 at the time of this writing), having a two point stop loss means you are risking approximately $100 per contract, perhaps more if you get any slippage, plus you must factor in commissions as a business expense. More contracts would obviously add more dollar risk. If you were planning on exiting with two profit targets, hence entering with at least two contracts, your dollar risk would then be $200. For a new trader with a small account, losing $100 per trade as your “learning curve” tuition can be daunting!

There are several e-micro futures contracts you could trade to make your dollar risk even less, but these are only on a few currency pairs. In addition, the volume on these contracts is pretty low. When trading in the spot forex market, trading micro lots at most brokerage firms will allow you to trade with stops that actually cost you as little as one dollar! Yes, you read that right. Now, you won’t be able to make an actual living when risking a dollar on your trades, but at least it will be cheap tuition! Yet another major difference in these markets is the cost to trade, based on the margin required to buy one contract (in futures) or a lot (in spot forex). The cost to purchase one contract in the futures markets varies by several factors: what your chosen broker charges, and what the exchange requires, and does the contract have a “day-trade buying power” leverage increase. When trading the e-mini S&P 500 futures contract, it takes $5060 of initial margin to purchase one contract. When using the day-trade rate, your contract costs 25% of that. When buying one contract of the EURUSD in their futures market, the cost is $2310, and one standard lot in the spot forex market is approximately $2477.00. Some lots are much cheaper, some are more expensive.

So there you have a few of the big differences. The very basics are: with futures markets, you can trade many different actual things-like metals, indexes, bonds, and some currencies. With a spot forex account, you get to trade only currencies, (but more of them). In the futures market, generally your expenses will be higher when measured by dollar risk, amount needed to trade, and cost to do the individual trades. Spot forex then has the benefit of being cheaper to trade and learn the skills. As stated earlier, every decision you make in trading has potential positives and negatives, and it is up to you to decide which is better for your circumstances. Eventually, you’ll probably do both asset classes, and I hope to see you in one of my classes! This information is written exclusively for educational purposes. CME came out with the announcement of launching the forex e-micro futures very recently in the market. The size of the contract has been reduced to one tenth of the normal size so that even a very small investor can avail the opportunity to take part in the forex futures market.

This size minimizes the risk from the point of an investor in forex futures market. The contract size has been reduced to vary small sizes with reduced margins which are proportionate to the investment. This step has been made to draw investors for retail participation. Last week was an exciting one for intra-day traders who follow the spot gold and major stock indexes. Actually, since early November 2009 the market has been performing very well for us. As we all know the market is consistently changing its price patterns and momentum from up, sideways to down, which in turn affects everyone’s trading results for any given month. For swingposition traders who trade using the daily charts they will find some months will favor trend trading strategies, while other months favor short term range bound strategies, and other months that just are not good for trading at all like last November and December. During extremely choppy market conditions such as we saw last November and December, the market was up an down like a yo-yo. Swingposition traders had a tough time making money, and speaking for myself, once the market gets like that I patiently sit in cash or hold very small positions. The good news is that when the market become choppy and swing traders are having a tough time making money (which is fast intra-day up and down movements), day traders come out of the wood work like fire ants. There are crazy amounts of money made and lost during high volume intra day trend reversals and pattern breakouts. Day Trading Spot Gold – YG J0 Gold Mini Futures Contract. Here is a quick video I did of my trade in gold on March 9th. This video shows a trade using the 5 minute spot gold chart profiting $6.00 per ounce with minimal downside risk. Depending on what you use to trade gold - Futures Contract, ETF or CFD - you could have profited $600-$2,400 in less than 2 hours.

This is the second video I have ever done so it’s nothing fancy by any means. It will take me a few more videos to get a good understanding of them as I do plan on doing weekly videos in the coming weeks and will be sure to make them more exciting. Day Trading the Index – DIA Exchange Traded Fund. If you watched the gold video above you will see how I day traded spot gold in the morning and why I used futures as my investment vehicle. That being said, anyone could have traded the GLD or DGP gold etfs. Only a couple hours later I saw a great Head & Shoulders pattern on the broad market indexes. Taking a step back, my chart analysis has been telling me to look for a reversal pattern on the broad market as I feel it is over bought, and I still do… So when I saw gold roll over then a reversal pattern on the Dow Jones Index, I decided to take a short position. Also, I noticed the price reverse down off the right shoulder. This time, I traded the DIA etf just because it is where I saw the pattern develop first and because I have a thing for DIA (I just like trading it). So once the price reversed down off the right shoulder with the long red candle I went short at $106.07 with a first target at $105.85 to sell half of my position, and then move my stop to break even on the balance of my position. I ended up pocketing just over 25 cents per share in gains which does not sound like much but because day traders get 4:1 and some brokers allow 10:1 leverage you can trade large amounts of shares for these quick trades. Trading the DIA I focus on 500 or 1000 shares per trade depending on how I feel about the trade. This particular trade I did 1000 shares pocketing $250 profit within 70 minutes. *Trading Tip* If you see a Head & Shoulders pattern with a neckline angled up (see chart below), then you should focus on trying to short the top of the right hand shoulder (the first reversal candle). The key here is to be short before the index (or any investment) breaks the neckline. Once a neckline is broken a large surge of sellers should rush in as everyone jumps out of their long position.

Also, this is the point when aggressive traders start taking a short in order to take advantage of the breakdown and price depreciation. So if you see a right shoulder drifting higher into resistance with that bearish looking flag, be ready to short once you see selling volume pick up and a drop in price. Day Trading Spot Gold and the Indexes Conclusion. Well I hope this short report helps you to take advantage of the market using different trading strategies and time frames. Every day and week is different and I jump around from trading 60 minutes charts, 4 hour, daily and the occasional 5 minute charts like the ones above. I try to stay away from the 5 minute charts simply because they move so fast, and the shorter the time frame the smaller the potential. But some days favor it so I just take what the market gives me and that’s all we can do. On another note, if you are interested in my new high-end trading service that trades all the setups in real-time, I will be launching this service with my personal trades and analysis for you to trade alongside me ! I am proud to say I was present on the trading floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange back in 1972 when the very first currency futures contracts were ever traded. But the standardized contract size – one of the hallmarks of all futures contracts – has sometimes been a drawback for the smaller, retail trader. Since March 23, 2009, the world of currency futures trading has added a new dimension aimed at the self-directed individual trader. This new dimension is known as Forex E-micro Futures. This guidebook will make you a better, more powerful trader. E-Micro Currency Futures At A Glance. Now there are six currencies available for trading, each 110th the size of the regular futures contract and requiring just 110th the margin requirement of the regular sized contract. These contracts trade electronically on Globex at CME Group. Brief Background and Illustration. On March 24, 2009, the spot (cash) Euro closed at 1.3451. This meant it would cost you $1.3451 to purchase a single euro. Now, let’s assume you wanted to trade euro currency futures (whether you wanted to day-trade or position trade won’t matter for this illustration). The regular sized Euro currency futures contract (also traded at CME Group) is based on a standardized 125,000 euros and the initial performance bond (or “margin requirement” if you prefer) which you would have to have in your account to trade one contract, is $6076. If the euro moved against the US dollar by 10 pips (10 points to a futures trader), the profit or loss would be INITIAL_CONTENT.0010 per euro…regardless of the contract size.

Since the futures contract is based on 125,000 euros, your profit or loss would be 125,000 x $.0010 = $125.00. On the other hand, if you were trading the E-micro futures you would need just $608 in your futures account for initial performance bond requirement to trade and you could attempt to profit from the same 10 point move. The same 10 pip (10 point) price movement from 1.3451 to 1.3461 would result in a profit (or loss) of just $12.50 (12,500 euros x $.0010). Benefits to Trading Micro Currencies in the Futures Marketplace. 1. Trading in a regulated market. Futures trading is governed by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the brokers that offer accounts must be members of the National Futures Association. 2. Fully transparent markets and a fair and level playing field. 3. Customer Protection. Trading futures offers the safety of segregated customer funds and counterparty credit risk. The counterparty to all cleared trades is the clearinghouse of the Exchange. 4. All trades are executed on CME Group’s Globex electronic platform. 5. Cash Settlement. Micro currency futures are all cash-settled, just like stock index futures.

There is no risk or possibility of having to make or take physical delivery, as there can be with the regular-sized CME currency futures. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) estimates that retail currency futures trading has a daily turnover of $65 billion. To appeal to retail traders already active in currency futures trading, CME Group has kept the contracts consistent with each other and maintains identical settlement prices. But to appeal to traders accustomed to the nomenclature of over-the-counter (OTC) trading, the exchange quotes the micro-contracts in Interbank terms. This means that the euro, Pound and Australian dollar are quoted in American (direct) terms but the Yen, Swiss franc and Canadian dollar are quoted (and traded) in European (indirect) terms. see contract specs below Forex E-Micro Currencies Available for Trading and their Contract Sizes. E-micro Euro: 12,500 euros. E-micro AUD: 10,000 AUD. E-micro Pound: 6,250 pounds. E-micro CAD: $10,000. E-micro Yen: $10,000. E-micro Swiss: $10,000. Now, smaller retail currency traders have complete and equal access to the book of prices and trading opportunities…..at 110th the margin requirement and 110th the risk.
